W650 |
Kawasaki W650 acquired in 2011. It's a 2003 version of Kawasaki's own W1 from the 1960s, which was based on the BSA A7 of the time. I think it's quite a good effort as 'retro' goes too. Doesn't make quite as much racket as a 1960s bike, but has about the same power, and it has a disc brake and modern electrics, so it stops and starts better than an old British machine. It's a parallel twin of 675cc. Note the shaft-driven camshaft instead of the more usual chain (or pushrods in the 1960s). This engine couldn't meet Euro emissions law with carburrettors, so they stopped importing it to the UK in 2006. New W800 which replaced it has fuel injection, but is mostly the same bike. They removed the kickstart though, which seems a shame. I rather enjoy firing mine up by foot alone, with the electric starter as backup if things don't go well... usually it fires on two kicks, and probably would on just one if I were built like a 1960s biker and didn't have a dodgy hillwalker's knee... |
I moved the rear indicators forward to below the seat- I think this looks better, but also takes weight off the mudguard thus saving it from cracking, which mine has started to do. I've glued reinforcment into it to try and halt this. It's a design fault, and many W650s have cracks appearing in the same spot. No indicators at all would look more 1960s, but you have to make a few compromises - I might swap these for less clunky-looking units.... |
